في احدى قرى الصعيد نشأ كل من ( نجيب – مها ) وكل منهما في احدى اكبر العائلتين هناك وبطبيعة الحالك كان بينهم صراعات طويلة ومع ذلك وقع نجيب في حب مها وطلب من اهلها الزواج منها ولكنهم رفضوا,عمل نجيب في مجال السياحة فكان يتردد إلى القرى المجاورة له والتى تنعم بالمعابد والمقابر الفرعونية اتلتى لم تكتشف بعد حتى عثر هو وصديق له على تمثال أثرى واختلفوا معا ودار بينهم شجار طويل فقتله نجيب وهرب مع مها إلى القاهرة ولجأ إلى أبن عم له كان يقيم هناك ويدرس في جامعة القاهرة ولكنه تهرب منه فتركه نجيب وبحث عن مأوى له .
تزوجوا وعاشوا معاً في سعادة وفي العالم الذى اختاروه بأيديهم ومرت السنوات وتعرفوا على ( حسن – امينة ) جيرانهم في البيت المجاور لهم ونشأت بينهم علاقة حب ومودة ,مرت 6 سنوات ولم يرزقوا بطفل وبعقل مريض انتظر نجيب خيانة مها له ,علم حسن بشأن التمثال واقترح على نجيب بيعه ولكنه رفض فالمبلغ كان ضئيلاً غير أنه لم يعطه الثقة الكاملة بعد .
اصبح التمثال هدف حسن الأول فبحث عنه لمدة طويلة في الوقت التى لا يكون فيها نجيب ولا مها في المنزل ,وفي يوم عادت مها من العمل لتجده يبحث في كل مكان في بيتها فضربها ضربة افقدها بها الوعى ولم يستطع منع شهوته الوحشية ففعل بها ما فعل ومن جانب اخر ليضمن صمتها.
