جيل آمن بالشيوعية وكافح وضحّى في سبيلها، وجيل عانى ويلاتها، ولاسيما في معسكرات العمل الستالينية، وجيل حاول الهروب من كل تلك الأجواء في هجرة معاكسة.
أكثر ما يميز هذه الرواية ضخامة أحداثها واتساعها الزمني، وأنها لا تشر بنهاياتها، فهي لا تتيح للقارئ الفرصة ليكتشف ما يمكن أن تؤول إليه الأمور؛ وأنها تعكس نوعين من الصراع في وقت واحد: صراع داخلي بخصوص ما جرى، وصراع بين الأجيال حول رؤيتهم للقيم التي أخذت بالتغيّر السّريع، بل تعرضنا لسلسلة من الانقلابات والمتلاحقة.
