لَمَّا كانَتْ حَضاراتُ الأُمَمِ ومَعالِمُ تَقَدُّمِها تُقاسُ باتِّساعِ حَرَكةِ العِلْمِ واسْتِحْداثِ عُلومٍ جَديدَةٍ تُصْقِلُ الفِكْرَ وتَبْعَثُ عَلى الِاجْتِهادِ والتَّفَكُّر، وانْدِثارِ أُخْرى جامِدَةٍ لا تَرْقَى لِمُتَطَلَّباتِ الأُمَمِ المُتطَلِّعةِ للتَّقَدُّمِ والرُّقِي؛ كانَ القَرْنُ الثَّالِثُ الهِجْرِيُّ هُوَ القاطِرةَ الَّتِي مَهَّدَتْ لتَأْسِيسِ الحَضارَةِ العَرَبيَّةِ الإِسْلامِيَّةِ الَّتِي امْتَدَّتْ لِقُرونٍ بَعْدَه. وفِي الوَقْتِ نفْسِه كانَ لِعُلَماءِ القَرْنِ الثَّالثِ الهِجْرِيِّ اليَدُ الطُّولَى فِي هَذا التَّأْسِيس؛ فَقَدْ تَنَوَّعَتْ مَشارِبُهم فَأَزْهَرَتْ عُقُولُهم في مَيادِينَ عِلْمِيَّةٍ مُتَنَوِّعةٍ كانَ مِن أَهَمِّها التَّرْجَمَة. ومِنْ أَبْرَزِ عُلَماءِ هَذا القَرْنِ «أبو حَيَّان التَّوْحِيدي» الفَيْلَسوفُ المُتَصَوِّف، والأَدِيبُ البَلِيغ، وَكذَلِكَ «مِسْكَوَيْهِ» الشَّاعِرُ والفَيْلَسُوف، وفِي هَذا الكِتابِ يُقَدِّمانِ لَنَا سِفْرًا فِي الأَخْلاقِ والْأَدبِ والتَّصَوُّف، عَن طَريقِ مَجْموعَةِ أَسْئِلةٍ تَلِيها أَجْوِبَة، خَرَجَتْ لَنا كمُنافَرةٍ أَدَبيَّةٍ أخْلاقِيَّةٍ جَامِعَة.
