بينما كان برجا التجارة العالميان يصبحان أثراً بعد عين، وفيما الدخان والغبار يغطيان أفق مانهاتن، بزغ فجر قصة حبّ ملتهبة بين لوسي وغابرييل، غير أنّ عوامل عديدة لعبت دوراً في فراقهما.. فالطموح، وعدم الوفاء، وتصاريف الدهر مجتمعة كانت لها بصمتها الحاسمة في مستقبلهما معاً. ففي الليلة التي كانت فيها لوسي المُنتجة المنفذة لأشهر برامج الأطفال تحتفل بفوز برنامجها بإحدى الجوائز، إذ بخبرٍ يصعقها، ويقلب حياتها رأساً على عقب.. فها هو حبيبها غابرييل يخبرها بأنه سيتركها ليحقق طموحه، وسيسافر إلى العراق للعمل مع أسوشييتد برس. بعد الفراق، يشاء القدر أن يتقاطع طريق لوسي مع دارن؛ ذلك الشاب الذي كان محط أنظار الفتيات اللواتي يعتبرنه فارس أحلامهنّ وشيئاً فشيئاً، تتطوّر العلاقة بينهما، ويتزوجان، وينشئان أسرة سعيدة. غير أن القدر كان للوسي بالمرصاد. ففيما السعادة ترفرف فوق هذه الأسرة السعيدة. يرجع غابرييل من السفر ويكدر صفاء هذه العائلة. "النور الذي فقدناه" تنوع سردي ملحمي يمزج عوالم الحب بعوالم الإرهاب.. نجمّ عنها، سفر فراق، وسفر لقاء، وسفر حياة، جارحة، حادة، ولكنها جميلة ومترعة بالمتعة. من أجواء الرواية نقرأ: "… حاولت أن أنسى ذاك اليوم، ولكن الأمر بدا مستحيلاً. لم أستطع نسيان ما حصل لنييورك، لأمريكا، للناس في البرجين. ولم أستطع نسيان ما حصل بيننا. حتى الآن، كلما سأل أحدٌ ما: "هل كنت في نيويورك حين انهار البرجان؟" أو "أين كنت في ذلك اليوم؟" أو "كيف كانت الأجواء هنا؟" أول شيء يخطر ببالي هو أنت. هنالك لحظات تبدل مسار حيوات الناس. بالنسبة إلى كثيرين ممن عاشوا في نيويورك حينها، كان يوم 11 سبتمبر اللحظة التي بدلت مسار حياتهم. كل ما فعلته ذلك اليوم كان مهماً، كان محفوراً في ذاكرتي ومرسوماً في قلبي. لا أعرف لمَ التقيتك ذاك اليوم، ولكن كل ما أعرف أن لقاءك يومها جعل منك جزءاً من تاريخي الشخصي وإلى الأبد".
