تحول "قاسم" إلى نجم في كل بيوت البلدة، رغم أنف الجميع. الرجال يهابونه، وينظرون إلى طوله الفارع بهيبة وإجلال، والنساء يتمنينه ويحلمن به في اليقظة والمنام، وعندما يمرق من شارع أو مكان يشم الجميع رائحته، حتى لو كانت الرياح نائمة، والهواء غائب. ويتقولون أن الملعونة قد بثت فيه من روح السامق- له المجد-، فأخذ منه هذه الهالة الأسطورية، يشاهدونها في بريق عينيه، وطوله الفارع، ووجع نساءهن، وصبر رجالهن على ما يشاهدونه، بل وخوفهم. و"سلمى" سعيدة بكل ما يدور حولها، تمتلك رجلًا له مواصفات خاصة. أما هو، فلا يعرف ما يدور حوله، لم يشعر به، كل ما يعيره اهتمامًا، هو هذا الفل الذي يقطفه من حديقة القصر، يأخذه ويبيعه في البلدة المجاورة، لم يشعر بنظرات النساء الحبلى، ويعتبر جرأتهن هذه شيئًا طبيعيًا في زمن انهمك فيه الرجال في البحث عن رغيف الخبز.
