تعيش الأسماك في أي مكان يوجد به الماء، فهي تكثر في المياه الدافئة بجنوبي المحيط الهادئ ومياه المنطقتين القطبية الشمالية والجنوبية حيث المياه المتجمدة، ويعيش بعضها على ارتفاعات عالية في الجداول الجبلية فوق سطح البحر، ويعيش بعضها الآخر تحت سطح البحر في الأعماق السحيقة من المحيط. وقد تكيّف الكثير من الأسماك للعيش في بعض المناطق الغريبة كالكهوف، وحفر المياه الصحراوية، والسَبْخَات، والمستنقعات، ويمكن لقلة من الأسماك بما فيها السمكة الرئوية الإفريقية والأمريكية الجنوبية العيش في الطين المبلل شهورًا عدة، وهكذا تعيش الأسماك في كثير من البيئات، وتعيش الأسماك ككائن مستأنس داخل مزارع سمكية للتربية أو التكاثر داخل مفرخات.
