الرواية تدور حول مجموعة من الأشخاص، كل منهم يعطينا جزءًا منها حتى إذا انتهت الرواية تجمعت لدينا صورة كاملة واضحة، تبدأ الرواية بمشهد الأب، مؤسس العائلة وهو في فراش الموت، أبنائه متجمعون حوله، يبكونه في صمت، يحاولون مقاومة دموعهم وحزنهم لكن بدون جدوى. أسلوب الرواية فريد من نوعه، حيث نجد تعدد للرواة داخل الرواية، لكن بطريقة متصلة للغاية، وكأن المؤلف قد اختار عدة أصوات لصوته هو وحده. توجد أيضًا شخصية واحدة، جعلها الكاتب جزءًا من العائلة في هذه الرواية، وهي شخصية ""فرانسيسكو لازارو""، وهو أول عدَّاء برتغالي ينضم لبطولات الأولمبياد، لكنه لم يكمل مشوار ومات شابًا، ذلك العدَّاء له تأثيرٌ كبيرٌ في حياة المؤلف، لأنه يرتبط في ذاكرته بوالده، وفيما حدث في حياته فيما بعد، وكيف أثرت هذه الأحداث عليه، ودفعته إلى كتابة هذه الرائعة ""مقبرة البيانو"".
جاء اسم الرواية من تلك الحرفة التي اشتهرت بها العائلة، ألا وهي تصليح ألات البيانو المعطوبة. خلف ورشتهم يوجد مخزن قديم به العديد من آلات البيانو التي لم تعد صالحة للاستخدام، ومن هنا جاء اسم ""مقبرة البيانو""، تلك ""المقبرة"" التي تحولت مع الوقت إلى ملجأ لكل من أراد الهرب من ضغوط حياته، ولكل من أراد أن يهتدي إلى طريق سعادته وخلاصه.
اختتم بايشوتو الترجمة العربية برسالة يوجهها إلى القارئ العربية، مفسرًا له السر وراء هذه الرواية، ولماذا هي شخصية وقريبة منه إلى حدٍ كبير.
