في رواية ""حُفظت القضية""، يبدأ الكاتب الأحداث بمفتش يحاول التحقيق في جريمة قتل – أو انتحار – والاعتداء على فتاة وكذلك البحث عن بعض المشاغبين الذين يشوهون الحوائط بكتاباتهم الساخرة والجرافيتي. لكن الكاتب في الحقيقة يُلقي نظرة ساخرة على مجتمعه في وقتنا الحالي، ويستنكر الواقع ويمدح العصور القديمة بشكل غير مباشر. حيث تجده يقطع الأحداث في هذه الرواية في بعض الأحيان ويتحدث مع القارئ بشكل مباشر ليفرض عليه الكثير من التساؤلات.
كما تظهر عبقرية الكاتب في استخدام ""الشطرنج"" في الرواية ليعكس الصورة الكئيبة الساخرة التي يقصدها. فهو يحاول تفسير الوضع الحالي في مجتمعه بشكل مختلف من خلال بطل الرواية، لكن الأمر في غاية التعقيد وليس بهذه السهولة. إنها رواية ساخرة، مليئة بالتلاعب بالكلمات، لا ينوي فيها الكاتب أن يوضح لك مباشرة ما يقصده منها، بل يترك لك تفسير الأمور ووصف حال هذا المجتمع.
