حينما اتضح لي أخيرًا أنني في الغالب لم أكن أفهم ما يخبرني به الآخرون، فإن ذلك أنار لي طريقي لاكتشاف شيء جيد.
بعض الأمور التي نحاول أن نخبر الآخرين بها معقدة، ولكن لا يبدو أن هذا سبب وجيه لعدم فهمي أنا إياها. فإذا استطاعوا هم فهم تلك الأمور، فلِمَ لا أستطيع أنا فهمها؟ فالمحاسب يخبرني بقانون الضرائب بطريقة لا معنى لها، ويشرح لي أحد رجال المبيعات شروط وثيقة التأمين التي لا يبدو أن لها أساسًا في الواقع. ولم أشعر بالرضا حين أدركت أن الجميع يسيئون إلى حد كبير فهم الجميع، ربما ليس في كل الأوقات، وليس بشكل كامل، ولكنه سوء فهم كافٍ لإفساد الأمور.
فهناك أشخاص يموتون؛ لأننا لا يمكننا التواصل بطرق تمكن بعضنا من فهم بعض.
يبدو ذلك الأمر مبالغًا فيه، ولكنني لا أعتقد ذلك.
حين لا يستطيع المرضى التواصل مع أطبائهم، أو اتباع تعليماتهم، وحين لا يستطيع المهندسون إقناع بلدة بأن السد من الممكن أن ينهار، وحين لا يستطيع الأب كسب ثقة ابنه بالشكل الكافي الذي يمكنه من تحذيره بشأن عقار قاتل، فإنه يمكن لكل تلك الحالات أن تنتهي نهاية خطيرة.
يدور هذا الكتاب حول ما يمكننا فعله حيال ذلك الأمر؛ حول كيف أنني تعلمت ما أعتقد أنه عنصر أساسي للتواصل الجيد ولاتصال بعضنا ببعض بطريقة أكثر فاعلية. ومن المثير للدهشة أنني وجدت ذلك العنصر في تدريبي وتجربتي باعتباري ممثلًا، وساعدني هذا الأمر على تعليم الآخرين كيفية التواصل بشكل أفضل، وبخاصة عن الأمور التي يصعب التحدث عنها، أو التي يصعب فهمها.
