سيرة أربعة أصدقاء تفرّقوا ذات صيف بعد جلسة ليلية صاخبة ليمضي كل منهم في سبيله، وبعد ربع قرن يعودون، وقد اكتهلوا إلى الحانة نفسها وكأنهم على موعد، ليرووا، تباعاً ما عاشوه من مغامرات وتجارب خلال رحلتهم الطويلة في الجغرافيا وداخل الذات، وليفرغوا ذاكرتهم المثقلة بالأسماء والمدن والتواريخ والنساء.
إنها رحلة مضنية أفضت بهم إلى حقيقة سرمدية هي أن كل التجارب الرّوحية، مهما اختلفت تمتح جميعها من معين واحد هو المعرفة أو الحكمة الأولى.
إلى ذلك، تقوم الرّواية على تيمة مركزيّة اشتغل عليها المؤلف طويلاً وهي أن الترقي الرّوحي لا يتحقق، بالضرورة، من خلال إماتة الجسد وقمع الشهوات، بل أيضاً من خلال اللذة وإشباع الحواس حتى لو أدى ذلك، أحياناً، إلى الإحساس بالغربة والألم.
أما الزمن في هذا العمل الملحمي فهو زمنان: زمن الخمارة وزمن الغيبة الصوفية اللانهائي، وأما الأمكنة فقد زُويت، على إتساعها لتُختزل في حانة هي الصرّة من المدينة المنجمية التي هي صرّة العالم، تنطلق منها الأحداث لتعود إليها في نهاية المطاف.
