هذه اشتات افكار لم ارم إبان كتابتها ان تضمها دفتا كتاب، ولا دار ذلك بخلدي، لولا انها تكاثرت مع الاعوام وتنوعت فنونا، فانشعبت بها جهات القول، فهي تارة تلوح في مسوح ناسك صوفي وتارة تتبديفي صورة شاعر عذري، وطورا تتردي ببردة النقد، وطورا تنزع منازع الفلسفة والحكمة، وهي في ذلك تتقلب بي هزل وجز واخذ ورد، وعرفان وجحد.
وقد قيل: شعر الرجل قطعة من كلامه وظنه قطعة من علمه، واختياره قطعة من عقلة وفي هذا المجموع من كل ذلك فيه من شعري ومن ظني ومن اختياري، وان شئت قلت فيه من كلامي ومن علمي،ومن عقلي فهو لذلك قطعة من نفسي وحسبك بهذا داعية إلي إثباته في الطرس؛صيانة له من عوادي الزمان وتقلب الحدثان ومن هذا الوجه سميته "قيد الاوابد").
