لكن لهذه اللوحة حكايات مُرّة. فمنذ بيعت بثلاثين فرنكاً فرنسياً لتغطية تكاليف دفن صاحبها، إلى أن صارت تساوي الملايين، سُرقت عدة مرات وأُعيدت بطريقة غامضة. وخلال ذلك كله دمّرت حياة كثيرين.
