تدور أحداث هذه الرواية على خلفية واقع شمال إنجلترا الصناعي في منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، وتحكي الرواية قصة بطلتها مارجريت هيل - وهي فتاة جميلة عزيزة النفس وذكية تنتمي لعائلة من الطبقة العليا لا يعرفها أحد إلا ويغرم بها ويقدرها. شغل والدهافي السابق منصب رجل دين في جنوب البلاد، ولكنه اضطر للرحيل بعائلته بعد تغير الظروف بعيدًا عن قريتهم المنعزلة الجميلة والانتقال إلى ميلتون - وهي مدينة ملوثة تقع في الشمال، سماؤها معبأة بدخان المصانع وتشتهر بالصناعات القطنية. هناك التقت مارجريت بأحد أصحاب المصانع الأثرياء ويُدعى السيد ثورنتون ، ولأنها نشأت على مقت هؤلاء الأشخاص الذين يجنون المال من التجارة ، فقد بغضته في الحال ورأت فيه رجلاً قاسي القلب لا يلين ولا يتعاطف مع عماله. أما صاحب المصنع فمن جهته كان يرى في مارجريت فتاة متعجرفة ، وكان يكره غرورها، ومع ذلك لم يستطع منع نفسه من الوقوع في حبها. تتناول الرواية تقلبات علاقتهما، حيث تمر مارجريت بسلسلة من المآسي الشخصية وتتعالى صيحات الإضراب في وسط العمال، وتصيب السيد ثورنتون عواقب دراماتيكية ، وتنعكس تغيرات الظروف الخارجية على كليهما فتتبدل الحال غير الحال، وفي الإطار نفسه، يقع رجلٌ آخر يُدعى هنري لينكس يحترف مهنة المحاماة في حب مارجريت . فهل من الممكن أن يظفر بها أحد الرجلين؟
