يهتم هذا الكتاب بالفكر الإسلامي الحديث، وما تفرّع عنه من أصوليات، وما زاحمه من أفكار علمانية، وما صادفه في مسيرته من محاولات شتى لعلمنته: تاريخاً ونصّاً، وما تبع ذلك من وضع مسائله في أفق اجتهادي وتجديدي مثل: علاقة الدين بالدولة، منزلة المرأة في النص الإسلامي، حدود حرية التفكير بالإسلام، وتشابكها مع قضية حقوق الإنسان، والموقف من الاستشراق. ويحاول أن يتلمّس أسباب تعثر هذا الفكر عن بداياته النهضوية الأولى، وعلة اقتصار الموقف الإيجابي من فكرة التقدّم وقيم الحداثة، منذ زمن ولادته الحديثة، على موقف نخبوي، ومدى مسؤولية آباء التنظير الأيديولوجي للطرح الإسلامي – كالمودودي وسيد قطب وغيرهما – في الانعطاف بهذا الفكر إلى فكر أصولي متصلب ومتشدّد. إضافة إلى وضع أصولية المسلمين، لإبراز شاهد على نفاق التفكير العلماني العربي وازدواجيته، فموقفه من قضية الحريات الفكرية موقف غير مبدئي، إذ يتوقف لدى جموعه على القائل وعلى طبيعة المقول.+++ ويقدّم فصلاً خاصاً عن إحسان عباس، يتضمّن سيرة تفصيلية باعتباره أنموذجاً حياً يصلح للإشارة والتدليل على زيف الصراعات المفتعلة بين القديم والجديد، ووضع جدار صفيق بين قضايا التراث وشواغل الحداثة.
