يبدأ الكاتب (بتال) بسرد الحالة التي أصابته بعد وفاة خطيبته أثر مرض السرطان، بينما هو يقطن في ذلك الوقت في العاصمة الإيرلندية لغرض الدراسة، لتدور عددٌ من الأحداث بينه و بين سيدهٌ عجوز أهدتهُ مهره بعد وفاتها تركت وصيتها له مع الحارس الخاص بالإسطبل الخاص، يصاب بعدها بأشهر بإعاقة منعته من ممارسه حياته بعد سقوط من المُهره (أثينا) مما يستوجب العودة لمسقط رأسه في مدينته والاصطدام بواقع هذه الحياة التي فرضت عليه نفسها، بين متداول الأيام المتكررة يكون للصدفة نصيب حينما قابل (نهال) على رصيف منزلهم قاصده أخته (بيان) حيث نهال رسامه كان وقد إستوقفته وأثارت حفيظته لوحة لها حينما كان سليماً بمعرض رسم قد دعاه له صديق منذُ عودتهم من دُبلن إثر إجازه صيفية.
لتدور بينه وبين (نهال) قصة حُب من جهته وعطف من جهتها، حصل في يومِ ما أن أراد أن يطلعه صديقه (أحمد) على شقته التي إبتاعها للزواج.
