إيراسموس هو فيلسوف هولندى، من رواد الحركة الإنسانية فى أوروبا، عاش وولد فى روتردام 28 أكتوبر 1466، وتوفى فى بازل السويسرية 1536، ورغم محاولاته الجادة لإتاحة قراءة الكتاب المقدس للعامة، بل وللنساء أيضاً، وهو ما كان محرماً حتى هذا التاريخ، وهو ما دعا مارتن لثور للثورة على الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، لم يكن له موقفاً صلباً من دعوات قادة الإصلاح الدينى فى هذا الوقت، وعلى رأسهم لوثر، فبعد عام 1517 وهو عام الإستقطاب الدينى الفكرى لم يجرؤ إيراسموس على الإنضمام إلى هذه الحركة الفكرية التحررية الثورية، التى دعت إلى فك أغلال القراءة المحافظة والسرية للكنيسة الكاثوليكية للكتاب المقدس، بل ونراه هنا فى هذا الكتاب يقدم رؤية نقدية لآراء مارتن لوثر فيما يتعلق بالإرادة الإنسانية، والكتاب فى الأساس عبارة عن محاورة بين المؤلف ومارتن لوثر كنج حول حرية الإرادة.
ويمكننا القول أن مواقفه كانت توفيقية فلم ينفصل عن كنيسته، الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، كما فعل لوثر واتباعه، بل وظن حتى آخر حياته أن بإمكانه حل الإختلافات التى بدأت فى الظهور بالتفكير والتأمل، وهو ما يحاول هنا أن يقوم به، وهو ما أدى إلى نقده من كلا الفريقين، المحافظ والثورى ! وتوفى إيراسموس فى صيف عام 1536 فى بازل.
