لأسباب كثيرة ومعقدة يطول شرحها، فُرض عليَّ أن أعيش مع جدي وجدتي لبضع سنوات عندما كنت طفلًا صغيرًا للغاية. وقد كانا - شـأنهما شـأن طـبيعة الجيل الذي كـانا ينتميان إليه بأكمله - يكدان في عملهما، ويعيشان حياة راضية. كان جدي قد أحيل إلى التقاعد المبكر إثر حادث عمل (حيث سقطت حمولة شاحنة من الطوب على قدمه)، بينما كانت جدتي تعمل في أحد المتاجر الكبرى متعددة الأقسام في لندن. ويبدو أن تدخُّلي المفاجئ في حياتهما قد تسبب لهما في مشكلات عديدة. كنت لا أزال صغيرًا على الالتحاق بالمدرسة، كما أن جدي لم يكن يملك قدرة العناية بي في المنزل (لم يكن الرجال يتولون مثل هذه المهام في تلك الأيام... يا إلهي، كم تغيرت الأوضاع!)، وكان الحل الذي توصلت إليه هو أن تحتويني جدتي تحت جناحها - وقد صح هذا التعبير بالفعل بمعناه اللفظي والمجازي، حيث إنها كانت تتحايل دائمًا لكي تخفيني بعيدًا عن أعين المديرين والمشرفين - وهكذا كنا نذهب إلى العمل معًا.
ولقد أصبح الذهاب إلى العمل بصحبة "جدتي"يمثل متعة لي، فلقد كان من المفترض أن أبقى دائمًا ملتزمًا الصمت والهدوء لفترات طويلة، وبما أنني لم أكن قد تعودت أي شيء آخر، فقد افترضت أن هذا هو الطبيعي. وقد اكتشفت وقتها أن مراقبة الزبائن من مخبئي تحت المكتب الضخم كانت تسبب لي متعة كبيرة لتمضية الوقت، وهكذا تولدت بداخلي نزعة ملحة في مراقبة الأشخاص.
