إن العمل العميق ضروري لانتزاع كل قطرة أخيرة ذات قيمة من قدراتك الفكرية الحالية، ونحن الآن نعرف من خلال عقود من البحث في كل من علم النفس وعلم الأعصاب أن حالة جهدك العقلي التي تصاحب العمل العميق ضرورية أيضًا لتطوير قدراتك. فالعمل العميق، بعبارة أخرى، يعبر فعليًّا عن نوع الجهد المطلوب للصمود في أي مجال يتطلب إدراكا مثل طب النفس الأكاديمي في مطلع القرن العشرين.
إن مصطلح "العمل العميق" من ابتكاري أنا؛ فلم يستخدمه "كارل يونج"، ولكن أعماله خلال هذه الفترة كانت أعمال شخص استوعب المفهوم الضمني لهذا المصطلح؛ حيث قام ببناء برج حجري في الغابة لتعزيز العمل العميق في حياته المهنية – وهي مهمة تطلبت وقتًا وطاقة ومالًا، وقد أبعدته أيضًا عن المزيد من الأعمال العاجلة. وكما كتب "ماسون كوري"، قلصت رحلات "يونج" المنتظمة إلى بولينجن من حجم الوقت الذي قضاه في عمله الإكلينيكي، مشيرا إلى أنه: "بالرغم من أن "يونج" كان لديه العديد من المرضى الذين يعتمدون عليه، لم يخجل من استقطاع بعض الوقت لنفسه". فالعمل العميق، بالرغم من عبء تصنيفه كإحدى الأولويات، كان ضروريًّا لهدفه المتمثل في تغيير العالم.
في الواقع، إذا درست حياة غيره من الشخصيات البارزة والمؤثرة سواء من التاريخ البعيد أو القريب، سوف تجد أن الالتزام بالعمل العميق فكرة مشتركة. فقد سبق "ميشيل دي مونتين" - رائد المقالة في القرن السادس عشرة، على سبيل المثال، "يونج" في العمل داخل مكتبة خاصة بناها في البرج الجنوبي المطل على السور الحجري لقصره الفرنسي، بينما ألف "مارك توين" جزءًا كبيرًا من كتاب "مغامرات توم سوير" داخل كوخ في ضيعة كواري فارم بنيويورك، حيث كان يقضي فصل الصيف. كان "توين" يدرس في عزلة تامة في مكان بعيد عن المنزل الرئيسي لدرجة أن عائلته اعتادت أن تقرع الجرس لجذب انتباهه إلى مواعيد الوجبات.
