كان الوقت مبكرًا فى صباح هذا اليوم الشتوى الذى جاءت بداياته قارسة البرودة عندما خرج من بيته، بينما البخار الكثيف يجثم على الجو، حتى جعله غائمًا مضببًا، لا يُرى من خلاله لأكثر من خطوات قليلة، سار فوق الرصيف مفعمًا بتلك البرودة، ثم دسَّ كفَّيه فى جيبىيْ بنطاله لتدفئتهما، سعيدًا بدفع البخار الصادر من جوفه فى زفرات متوالية وبطيئة، متأملا لونه الثلجىَّ الغائمَ.
لمْ تستمر هذه اللعبة كثيرًا، فقد أنهاها تساؤل عابر برَق فى ذهنه فجأة: مالذى يجرى داخل أجسامنا حتى تتصاعد تلك الأبخرة مع زفراتنا فى هذه الصباحات الشتوية، بينما لا تظهر فى الصباحات الأخرى.. وإلى أين تذهب بعد ذلك؟؟ ثم وجد نفسه يجيب بتلقائية: إنه التلاشى المؤقت، ثم العودة مرة أخرى فى صورة المطر، يهبط فوق أى بقعة فى هذا العالم.
استدرك مرة أخرى بتساؤل غريب بعث فى نفسه حيرة عميقة موقنًا أنه يستحق عناء التفكير: أين تذهب أصواتنا بعد أن تخرج من حلوقنا وأفواهنا؟ أين تستقر هذه الكلمات؟ وفى أى مكان تتجمع دون أن تنهمر علينا مرة أخرى مثلما يحدث مع المطر؟
ظلت الأسئلة تراوده وهو يواصل سيره الحثيث حتى تضاءل التفكير فيها رويدًا رويدًا إلى أن تلاشت من رأسه تمامًا، مع خروج كفَّيه من جيبىيْ بنطاله ليشعل سيجارة، ثم ارتسمت على وجهه ابتسامة واهنة وهو يدفع الدخان الممزوج بالبخار فى دفقات متمهلة.
