خروجي لمقابلة أصدقاء عمري وزملاء دراستي من أيام المدرسة ينعش قلبي ويغسل روحي من هموم علقت بها فأثخنتها وهددت سلامها. دائما ما أرجع من جلستنا وأنا خلي البال، سعيدا، رائق المزاج. نتقابل كل خميس ليلا، ونتخذ من مقهى بشارع روكسي ركنًا لاجتماعنا. نجلس ونتضاحك على أحوالنا ونتندر على مشكلاتنا. وعندما نمل نتفحص الوجوه حولنا، حتى حفظنا كل زبائن المقهى، واتخذنا من هيئاتهم وأحاديثهم وطريقتهم في المشي أو في الجلوس مادة للتندر. نحن ثلاثة أصدقاء أولنا «علي» خريج الحقوق الذي يعمل بالتجارة في لعب الأطفال، متزوج وله طفلان، يحب المجيء للقهوة، للهروب من هموم المكسب والخسارة، وضوضاء الأطفال وإزعاج الزوجة. وثانينا «هشام» خريج الآداب ويعمل صحفيا بإحدى الجرائد، وهو حتى لا يملك ترف أن يحلم بالزواج، ويتعلل دائما بقوله: «الصحافة ما تفتحش بيت». والعبد لله ثالثهما خريج كلية التجارة، وأعمل محاسبا بإحدى الشركات الكبرى أعزب ولا أنوي الزواج. خلقني الله حرا ولن أتنازل عن حريتي أبدا ولو حتى للنصف الحلو. «بليغ وبيرم» هما أهدأ مرتادي المقهى، عجوزان، موظفان أكل المعاش من عمريهما وشرب. يدخلان المقهى يتأبط أحدهما ذراع الآخر. يجلسان في آخر ركن، يطلبان اليانسون ويبدآن في لعب الشطرنج في هدوء وتركيز دونما صوت على الإطلاق.
