" تتضمن الرواية في حناياها حكايات الدجل والموت والخيال والطمع الذي يسيطر على مجموعة من الناس ينحدرون من جد واحد ويحلمون بالدفينة أو الكنز الذي تركه جدهم الأكبر شديد الألفي. ينجح الكاتب من خلال عرض يتسم بالبساطة ويتحاشى المبالغات اللفظية والجمالية في لف شخصياته بالغموض الذي لا يكشفه للقارئ دفعة واحدة ولا يزيح عنه الستار في مشهد واحد صادم بنهاية الرواية كعادة الكثير من الروائيين بل يفعل ذلك عبر مراحل تطور الرواية ووقائعها.
أهم شخوصه “جاد” حاكم القرية أو الكفر بحكم الأمر الواقع بسطوة المال والنفوذ والانفتاح على العالم و”غازي” الدجال الذي يدعي العلم بالخفايا عن طريق الأرواح وصلاته بالجن بكل ما يرمز إليه من جهل وتخريف وتغييب للعقل.
شخصية “حمودة” التي تبتدئ بها الرواية هي شخصية شاب طموح غريب عن القرية اضطر للعمل مع خاله “الشافعي” على شاحنته بناء على وصية الأم التي تريد أن تصرف ابنها عن الغناء. أما الخال “الشافعي” فيرى في حمودة عريسا جيدا لابنته “شادية” حتى لا تتزوج من رجل غريب يرث الشاحنة التي دفع سنوات العمر وشقاء السنين من أجل شرائها.
ينجح المشعوذ “غازي” في فرض سيطرته على أهل “كفر الألفي” بينما هو نفسه خاضع لسيطرة صاحب المال والنفوذ “جاد” يأتمر بأوامره وينتهي بنواهيه وينفذ إرادته بإصدارها للناس في شكل رسائل من ملوك الجان. "
