في صباي، لم يكن لديّ، ولربّما حتّى لدى الكثير من أقراني، إلا صور مبهمة عن شعب يجاورنا، ويجمعنا معه الكثير من التاريخ والثقافة المشتركة، وأعني به الشعب الإيراني. إن كل انطباعاتنا عن هذا الشعب الجار بقي في إطار مظهر الزوّار الإيرانيين، وغالبيّتهم من الفلاحين والفئات المُعدَمة، والذين كانوا يفدون إلى العراق لزيارة العتبات المقدّسة في النجف وكربلاء والكاظمين وسامراء، ثمّ يؤمّون بيت الله الحرام للحجّ في مواسمه، وزيارة مرقد السيّدة زينب في ضواحي دمشق. ويتسلّل نفر آخر من الإيرانيين عبر الحدود إلى العراق أيضاً، بهدف دفن موتاهم إلى جوار العتبات المقدّسة في النجف وكربلاء، حيث يقوم المهرّبون لقاء مبالغ معتبرة بنقل جثث الموتى عبر الحدود الإيرانية العراقية، ثمّ يتمّ إيصالها إلى المُدُن المقدّسة، ليتمّ دفنهم هناك.
وبقيت معرفتي محدودة بهذا الشعب العريق، على الرغم من أن اثنين من أخوالي كانا متزوّجين من إيرانيتين. ويحمل أحدهما، طيّب الذِّكْر المرحوم الحاج مصطفى محسن الصفار، الجنسية الإيرانية منذ العشرينيات من القرن الماضي. فقد غادر خالي العراق للعمل في مرفأ بيروت، وصادف أن زار إيران للسياحة، ووقع في غرام فتاة إيرانية، وتزوج منها في طهران، وتجنّس بالجنسية الإيرانية بعد أن خيّرته حكومة رضا شاه بين البقاء وحمل الجنسية الإيرانية أو مغادرة إيران. واستقرّ الخال في إيران حتّى وافته المنية في عقد التسعينيات من القرن العشرين. وكان الخال يتردّد على بغداد بين فترة وأخرى في مواسم الحجّ، وينظّم رحلات الحجاج الإيرانيين إلى مكّة المكرّمة، وزيارة العتبات المقدّسة في العراق بما كان يُعرف آنذاك بـ"الحمله دار".
