كان "هنري فورد" مهووسًا منذ صغره بالأجهزة الميكانيكية، مثل الساعات والألعاب الميكانيكية، ولم يكن قد شاهد من قبل ما يؤهله مسبقًا لاستيعاب ما رآه في أحد الطرق الترابية في ولاية ميتشيجان في عام ١٨٧٦؛ فعندما كان عمره اثني عشر عامًا، شاهد "هنري" عربة صغيرة تحمل محركًا بخاريًّا تمر من أمامه بسرعة. كان الفلاحون قديمًا يستخدمون المحركات البخارية لتشغيل آلات الحراثة، وكانت الخيول تجر هذه العربات من مكان لآخر، ولكن صاحب ذلك "المحرك الذي يسير في الطريق" طوّر هذا الأمر، حيث ربط المحرك في عجلات العربة بسلسلة، وهكذا سارت في طريقها بقوة دفع ذاتية! وأصابت هنري الدهشة!
وتنحى الفلاح صاحب المحرك الذي يسير في الطريق جانبًا؛ ليفسح الطريق ليمر "هنري" بعربته التي تجرها الخيول، ولكن "هنري" أوقف عربته في الحال؛ ليسأل الفلاح بعض الأسئلة عن آلته تلك، وشرح له الفلاح كيفية عمل المحرك، وكيفية استغلاله للطاقة الناتجة عنه لتحريك العربة، وعرف "هنري" منذ هذه اللحظة أنه سيكرس حياته لإنتاج عربات ذاتية الدفع.
وفي النهاية بالفعل صنع "هنري" أشهر سيارة على الإطلاق وهي سيارة: فورد موديل تي.
وباعت شركة "فورد" أكثر من ١٥ مليون قطعة من سيارة موديل تي حول العالم من عام ١٩٠٨ حتى عام ١٩٢٧.
وساعد بذلك "هنري فورد" الناس على الانتقال من استخدام الخيول ومحرك الطرق إلى استخدام سيارات سريعة وقوية لتنقلنا إلى حياة أكثر حداثة.
