ذات يوم، لم تتمكن عائلة "إديسون" من العثور على طفلها ذي السنوات الست، الذي كانت تناديه باسم "آل"، وذلك خلال زيارتها شقيقة "آل" الكبرى وزوجها في مزرعتهما التي كانت تقع خارج مدينة ميلان بولاية أوهايو، وكان ذلك في عام ١٨٥٣.
وفجأة طرأت ببال عم "آل" فكرة؛ فركض إلى الحظيرة مسرعًا، فوجد "آل" جالسًا فوق كومة من القش، حيث كان يحاول أن يجعل بيضة إوزة تفقس؛ فقد رأى "آل" دجاجة راقدة على بيضها وحولها بعض الكتاكيت الصغيرة؛ فأراد أن يخرج إوزة صغيرة من بيضتها؛ ففعل مثل الدجاجة ورقد على بيضة الإوزة.
لكن عائلة "إديسون" لم تندهش مما قام به "آل"؛ فقد كان لديها ثلاثة أبناء آخرين، ولكن أصغرهم "آل" كان هو الأكثر فضولًا، واستمر على هذا النحو بقية حياته.
كان العالم مختلفًا للغاية، عندما كان "توماس ألفا إديسون" في طفولته؛ فلم تكن هناك أضواء كهربية لاستخدامها في الرؤية، أو موسيقى مسجلة للاستماع إليها، أو أفلام لمشاهدتها، ثم جاء "إديسون" الذي جعل كل هذه الأمور ممكنة، بل فعل ما هو أكثر من ذلك، حيث غير حياتنا إلى الأبد. آمن "إديسون" أشد الإيمان بالاختراعات؛ تلك الاختراعات التي بوسعها جعل حياتنا اليومية أكثر سهولة وأعظم راحة، وهذا بالضبط ما حققه "إديسون".
ولربما كان "توماس ألفا إديسون" هو أعظم مخترعي عصره.
