كانت "ماري كوري" عالمة في وقت كان تقريبًا لا يوجد فيه علماء من النساء. ففي الواقع، لم يكن غالبية النساء يذهبن إلى الجامعة حينها! ولكن لم تكن "ماري" مثل غالبية النساء، فقد كانت تتحدث خمس لغات، وكانت تحب حل المسائل الرياضية كثيرًا، لدرجة أن والدها كان يرسلها إليها في خطاباته، كما قد قابلت "ألبرت أينشتاين" العالِم الأكثر شهرة في العالم! وكانت فائقة الذكاء مُصرة على النجاح.
وكان سيتم منح "ماري" جائزة نوبل لإنجازاتها في مجال العلوم، فقد اكتشفت معدنًا جديدًا! وأطلقت عليه اسم الراديوم.
وفي بادئ الأمر، لم تكن تعلم حتى ماهية هذا المعدن، فكل ما كانت تعرفه أنه معدن قوي بصورة مثيرة للدهشة، وباعث للطاقة! كما أنه يشع ضوءًا أخضر خافتًا في الظلام، وظنَّت "ماري" أنه يشبه الأضواء التي يأتي ذكرها في القصص الخيالية.
وبحلول الوقت الذي انتهت فيه "ماري" من عملها، أحدث اكتشافها تغييرًا في العالم بشكل متباين، وقد صارت "ماري كوري" العالمة الأكثر شهرة في التاريخ.
