ورغم شهرة شكسبير الواسعة، فلم يصلنا عنه الكثير، وهناك جزء كبير من حياته الشخصية لا يزال غير معروف؛ ففي القرن السادس عشر لم يكن من المعتاد الاحتفاظ بسجلات كثيرة عن كل شخص. ونحن نعرف أن حياة شكسبير بدأت كابن صانع قفازات في ستراتفورد آبون آفون. وأنهى حياته كمؤلف مسرحي ثري ومشهور في لندن. ولكن ما الذي حدث خلال هذه الفترة؟ إننا نعلم تاريخ زواجه، وتاريخ ولادة أطفاله. ونعلم أنه عاش بعيدًا عن عائلته لسنوات طويلة؛ حيث ذهب إلى لندن، واشتغل ممثلًا، وكاتبًا، ومخرجًا مسرحيًّا. وبنى مسارح، واشترى أخرى. كما ألف ومثل العديد من المسرحيات لملكة إنجلترا. وأقام علاقات صداقة مع نبلاء من ذوي النفوذ.
ولكن ماذا عن حياة شكسبير اليومية؟ ما نوعه كرجل وكأب، وما الذي جعله كاتبًا مسرحيًّا؟
