في ٢٥ مايو ١٩١٠، قام "ميلتون رايت" بأول رحلة له بالطائرة، وقد عاش حياة طويلة مليئة بالأحداث؛ إذ عمل خلالها في خدمة إحدى دور العبادة، واهتم بتربية أبنائه كما اعتاد السفر أيضًا بشكل دائم، لكنه لم يسبق له قط أن ركب طائرة. فبطبيعة الحال، لم يكن هناك في عام ١٩١٠ سوى عدد قليل من الناس ممن سبق لهم ركوب الطائرة!
وكان الشخصان اللذان مرا بتجربة الطيران هما ابني "ميلتون"، "ويلبر" و"أورفيل رايت"؛ فهما اللذان اخترعا الطائرة في عام ١٩٠٣، وشهد "ميلتون" نضجهما من ولدين فضوليين يعملان بجد إلى اثنين من أشهر الرجال في العالم.
وقد صنع الأخوان "رايت" الطائرة، وحلقا بها بعد سنوات من المحاولات، وارتكاب الأخطاء، والعمل الشاق. ومنذ أوائل القرن العشرين حتى الوقت الحاضر، تشتمل كل طائرة تم تصنيعها على شيء ابتكره الأخوان "رايت".
لقد غيَّر اختراعهما وجه العالم، لكنَّ الأخوين في هذا اليوم من شهر مايو عام ١٩١٠ لم يكونا يهتمان بالعالم، بل كانا سعيدين فحسب بمشاركة نجاحهما وفرحتهما مع والدهما الذي قدم إليهما الكثير من الدعم.
ففي حقل ليس ببعيد عن منزل عائلتهما في دايتون بولاية أوهايو، أجلس "أورفيل رايت" والده ذا الواحد والثمانين عامًا داخل الطائرة، ثم جلس "أورفيل" عند مكان القيادة. وتشبث الرجلان بالطائرة حتى زادت سرعة صعود الطائرة ببطء، ثم أقلعت! وقد حلقا بشكل دائري في الميدان مرارًا وتكرارًا، وظلا في الهواء لما يقرب من سبع دقائق.
وخلال الرحلة مال "ميلتون" نحو ولده، وراح يصرخ بصوت أعلى من هدير المحرك قائلًا:"أعلى يا أورفيل ... أعلى!".
إذن، فهذا هو المكان الذي أخذ إليه "أورفيل" والده "ميلتون" ... وهذا المكان ذاته الذي أخذ إليه الأخوان رايت العالم.
