تدور أحداث الرواية كلها في ليلة واحدة حول مائدة العشاء التي يلتقي عليها شقيقان: مدرس سابق لا يعمل وزوجته، وسياسي مرشح لمنصب رئيس وزراء وزوجته. الأربعة يبحثون أحوال أبنائهم – ميشيل وريك، فإلي أي مدي يمكن أن يذهب الآباء من أجل حماية أولادهم.
كُتب الكتاب بأسلوب جديد ومختلف نال الكثير من الاستحسان على مستوي النقاد والقراء على حد سواء.
فهناك الراوي مدمن الحكايات، يروي بعض الأحداث التي تبدو عادية جدًا، كاجتماع أسرة على مائدة العشاء، ولكن من خلال تفاصيل الحكاية التي تتكشف شيئا فشيئا تتضح أبعاد الصراع الذي يدور بين أفراد الأسرة، وبينما تتصاعد الأحداث لتصل إلي الذروة، نتعرف على الشخصيات وتفاصيل حياتهم من خلال وجهة نظر الراوي.
