"تدور الرواية حول المجاعة في فنلندا عام 1867، ونزوح عدد هائل من المزارعين إلى المدن المجاورة من أجل تسول الطعام. وهو ما يدفع مجلس الشيوخ بالعاصمة هلسينكي إلى البحث عن بدائل يستطيعون بها السيطرة على تلك الأزمة.
المكان الذي تدور فيه أحداث الرواية يتصف بالكآبة، والحبكة تعتمد بطريقة رئيسية على التوازي، حيث تجد فصل يدور حول مشاعر شخصية واحدة وعندما ينتهي بموتها، يبدأ فصل آخر يدور حول مشاعر شخصية أخرى وبين كل شخصية وأخرى يوجد فصل يحكي عما يدور في مجلس الشيوخ، وهكذا. الجميل في هذه الرواية هي طريقة تقسيم الفصول ووصف الطبيعة والأشخاص ومعاناتهم، وكيف ربط المؤلف الثلج ولونه الأبيض بمصير أبطاله. نجده يقدم لنا المعاناة التي مر بها الناس في تلك الفترة من خلال عائلة بسيطة مكونة من زوجين وصبي وفتاة. يموت الزوج أولاً، فتترك الزوجة بيتها آخذة معها طفليها ليبدأوا رحلتهم إلى مدينة سان بطرسبرج أو ""مدينة القيصر"". طوال الطريق هي تحلم بتلك المدينة وتتصور انها ستكون نهاية شقائها. أول شخصية يقدمها لنا الكاتب هي شخصية ابنتها ""ماتالينا""، بعدها يقدم لنا فصلاً بعنوان شهر معين في سنة معينة، يسرد فيه أحداثًا عامة حدثت حينها، ثم يستكمل فصول شخصياته.
رواية ""الجوع الأبيض"" هي أول رواية لـ""آكي أوليكانين"". حصلت على جائزة هيلسينجين.
