الرواية هي تأريخ للمكان، وهو ليس موطنا لمجتمع متجانس تناوله الأدب وتناولته السينما والدراما كمجتمع القرية والريف شمالا أو جنوبا، أو المجتمع البدوي الذي تعارف على قوانينه واعتمدها وارتضاها جيلا بعد آخر، وليس مجتمع المدينة بقوانينه الصارمة، وإنما هو موطن لخليط من كل هؤلاء، الريفي والصعيدي والقاهري والبدوي والغريب والهارب والتائه والحلبي الذي لا أصل له ولا فصل. هؤلاء الذين تجمعهم خيرالله كما تجمعهم كل منطقة عشوائية غيرها فيتحزب فيها الأقارب والمعارف والبلديات وتصير عصبيات لا يربط بينها سوى الرغبة في الشعور بالأمان. فترصد الرواية النشأة والمولد منذ بداية الثمانينيات وحتى يشق الدائري قلبها كما يشق مسار جوي سحابها، لا ينال سكانها منه سوى هدير السيارات العابرة من الجيزة إلى القاهرة الجديدة، وسوى أكداس من القمامة يقذف بها سائقو السيارات في عبورهم السريع فوق خيرالله، هي نموذج لحيٍ عشوائي صار - كآلاف غيره- مفرخا للخوف والضعف وعبئا ثقيلا على كاهل مجتمعه الأكبر. وهي تقع في قلب القاهرة القديمة لكنها الأبعد عن مجتمع العاصمة بشوارعها وسكانها ومهنها وطبيعتها.
