لا يزال الإعلام بوسائله المختلفة القوة المستمدة من قوة الأمة حيث أكدت بعض الدراسات تفوق الصحف على وسائل الإعلام الأخرى كالتليفزيون والإذاعة والفضائيات المختلفة كمصدر للمعلومات السياسية والمعرفة لدى الأفراد حيال القضايا المختلفة بسبب تميزها عن غيرها في مدة بقاء المادة المقروءة أكثر، والتعمق في تغطية تفاصيل الأحداث ومناقشتها في مساحات كبيرة . كما أنه مع التطور المستمر في تكنولوجيا الاتصال وتداخل العلاقات الدولية وتشابكها، والأحداث الخارجية المتلاحقة، لم يعُد من المقبول أن تظل المعلومات التي تنقلها وسائل الإعلام وخاصة الصحف عن هذه الأحداث بعيدة عن اهتمامات ومدارك الأفراد، أو أن تظل المعرفة بها حكراً على فئات معينة دون الأخرى، كما أن البعد المكاني لبعض الأحداث لا يقلل من أهميتها أو تأثيرها، فقد أصبحت المعرفة بهذه الأحداث والقضايا الخارجية أمراً هاماً يقتضيه طبيعتنا كأفراد لا نعيش بمعزل عن العالم، بل نعيش في عالم واحد نؤثر فيه ونتأثر به. والمعرفة الصحيحة الواعية تكون أول الطريق لتكوين اتجاهات واعية وسلوك صحيح إزاء القضايا والأحداث المختلفة ، كما أشارت نتائج العديد من الدراسات والنظريات العلمية على أن توفر المعلومات من خلال وسائل الإعلام في مجتمع ما لا يعني وصولها بالفعل إلى جميع أفراد هذا المجتمع، فهناك متغيرات أخرى مرتبطة بسمات شخصية في الأفراد أو بطبيعة البناء الطبقي للمجتمع الذي يعيشون فيه أو بنوع الوسيلة الإعلامية التي يعتمدون عليها كمصدر للمعلومات، وهذه العوامل يمكن أن تؤثر في قدرتهم على اكتساب المعلومات وفهمها وأيضاً تذكرها.
