زهرة طفلة كقطعة من الثلج نحتتها الطبيعة. شعرها المعقوف قد يصل إلى ردفيها إن هي أسدلته، لونه الذهبي تغار منه الشمس حين ترتمي على المرج الأخضر الفسيح بغنج وفتنة، قوامها اسرتقت منه أغصان قمح حقلها الغائب رشاقتها وتمايلها الساحر. عند خروجهما إلى المدينة غطتها والدتها بالكامل وعندما سألتها زهرة عن السبب أخبرتها أنها تخشى عليها صقيع شتاء المدينة. لكن لماذا لا تشعر الآن أن هذه الثياب كافية لتدفئتها.
شيء بداخلها يرتجف بشدة لم يفعل ذلك من قبل. إلى من تذهب وأين تنام وهاهو الظلام قد أكمل آخر سطر في كابوسها بحلوله؟ توالت الأسئلة في عقلها الصغير فلم يحتملها دفعة واحدة ليطبق على جفنيها ظلام أشد لكنه أشعرها بالراحة والأمان المفتقد فاستسلمت له بملء إرادتها.
