ثم يعود المهرج إلى مرآته في نهاية اليوم. أعود إلى غرفتي المغلقة على وحدتي العارية. ربما تمسني كهرباء خفيفةٌ للحظات عابرة، بينام أخلع ثيابي، وأتأهب للنوم قرب الفجر، فأشعر وكأنني صرتُ ماما نفسها، وهي تنزع عنها إكسسوار إحدى شخصياتها. لم أكن هانوشكا في الحقيقة، كان هذا هو الدور المناسب لي، مجرد دورٍ، لا أكثر ولا أقل. ربما اندمجتُ فيه أكثر مما يجب، حتى لم أعد أعرف من هو هاني محفوظ الحقيقي، وكيف أعود إليه عندما أريد. عندي نسخٌ كثيرةٌ منه. صحيحٌ: كلها طبق الأصل، لكنها ليست الأصل، ليست أنا، كلها أقنعةٌ وخلفها لا يوجد أيُّ شيءٍ، فراغٌ مُفْزِعٌ، وله لذةٌ. أثناء فترة سجنه، يُصابُ هني محفوظ بخرسٍ طارئٍ، ثم يخرج بعد بضعة أشهر، ليحاول أن يجد موضع قدميه مِن جديد، وأن يسعيد صوته بين دفاتره، حيث يكتب كلَّ يوم، فارضًا على نفسه عزلةً اختياريةً بغرفة فندق، لا يُشاركه إياها غير عنكبوتٍ صغيرٍ. يكتبُ متتبعًا صوره القديمة، على أمل العثور عىل صورةٍ واحدةٍ حقيقيةٍ له، يكتب حكاياته الصغيرة مع أهله وميوله الخاصة والأفراح الخاسرة في شوارع الليل، و عن تجربته المُذلَّة خلال أشهر سجنه، مُنقِّبًا عن مغزًى خفيّ، وراء كل ذلك، في رحلةٍ لا تتبع خطًّا مُستقي ،ًام بقدر ما تأخذه في اتجاهاتٍ عديدةٍ، كأنها شبكةُ عنكبوتٍ يغزلها بخيطٍ واحدٍ هو صوته المفقود.
