"الإعلام ككل معرفة تحتمل العلم والفن، والعلم هو القواعد والأسس والمبادئ والقواعد المبرهنة والمجربة فى معرفة ما.
أما الفن فهو الطرق والوسائل العملية لإعمال معرفة ما، والطريقة الفنية بوسائل متعددة لإعمال معرفة فى مجال محدد ومعين.
وهنا نتناول الإعلام كعلم له قواعد واسعة وتعريفاته وطرقه وإجراءاته وطرق ومناهج البحث العلمى فيه، أما الخبر فهو أحد فروع الإعلام وأهمها والأساس الأول فى الصحافة والتلفزيون والإذاعة، وهو يتطلب معرفة علمية ذات تطبيقات واسعة على طرق التحضير له وإعداده ووسائل كتابته المختلفة والمتعددة.
ونتناول هنا الأسس العلمية للخبر نظرياً وكذلك الطرق الفنية العملية لكتابة وتحرير الخبر الصحفى كما سنتناول المقال الصحفى بأنواعه المختلفة وتأثيره على الرأى العام وكيفية كتابته علمياً وعملياً، واعتمد الكتاب على محاضرات عن الإعلام التطبيقى والتى ألقيت على طلبة السنتين الثالثة والرابعة شعبة الإعلام بكلية الآداب جامعة الإسكندرية، منذ عام 1995، وحتى تاريخه. وتعتمد المحاضرات على أسس نظرية لمن سبقونى وخاصة الأستاذ الدكتور/ فاروق أبو زيد عميد كلية الإعلام السابق بجامعة القاهرة والأستاذ الدكتور/ محمود أدهم أستاذ الإعلام. وعلى كتب الأستاذ المرحوم جلال الدين الحمامصى وعلى كتابات أخرى، كما تعتمد على خبرات عملية بممارسة مهنة الصحافة لمدة تربو على الثلاثين عاماً فى جريدة الأهرام أعرق المؤسسات الصحفية فى العالم العربى والمؤسسة عام 1875.
