الموضوع الذى أتناوله فى هذه الدراسة السريعة موضوع شائك وظالم، معقد وغريب، يزيد من غرابته ذلك النهج الأكثر غرابة الذى اتبعه حياله المؤرخون كافة، القدامى منهم والحديثون. فقد مروا عليه مرور الكرام، واعتبروه حدثاً عادياً شأن غيره من الأحداث، ليس فيه ما يشينه أو ما يبعث على الغرابة. فقال أكثرهم إن البقط لا تعدو أن تكون مجرد معاهدة تبادل تجارى، يتعهد أحد طرفيها بأن يقدم كل عام بضاعة بشرية، سواء من أبنائه أو من أبناء القبائل المجاورة، بضاعة محددة العدد والنوع، مقابل كميات غير محددة من الطعام. وتغافلوا عن أن هذه المعاهدة كانت فريدة فى طبيعتها. بل إن مؤرخاً مرموقاً، هو محمد جمال الدين سرور، عندما تناول هذا الموضوع، قد أسقط تماماً لفظة البقط، مستعيضا عنها بألفاظ من قبيل ""الإتاوة المقررة"" أو ""الجزية"" أو الأموال التى فرضها المسلمون عليهم بعد فتحهم لها* وهو إسقاط يوحى بالتهوين من شأنها، وبمحاولة غير خفية لتبريرها.
فنحن لم نسمع فى التاريخ عن معاهدة يلزم أحد طرفيها بان يقدم خيرة أبنائه، ذكورا وإناثا، مقابل شئ من الطعام، ولم نسمع عن معاهدة يستمر تطبيقها سبعة قرون متصلة دون انقطاع. أحد طرفيها ثابت، وطرفها الثانى يتغير كل حين بتغير العناصر الفاعلة فيه. ليس يهم إن كانوا سنة أو شيعة، أو كانو عربا أو أتراكا أو مغاربة. ولكن الهدف كان واحدا لا يتغير هو وصول البضاعة البشرية إلى القوى المتسلطة فى القاهرة، التى لم يتخل أى ُّ منها فى أية لحظة زمنية عن الحصول على هذه الثروة الثمينة.
