"صيف ذلك العام هي رواية الاغتراب التي تولد نوعا من البحث عن الذات، المكان هو فرنسا حيث تتعرف البطلة على جيرانها في السكن، وأثناء هذا البحث، تعيش البطلة فكرة الابتعاد عن كل ما يذكرها بوطنها، ولكنها تتعرف على شاب أفغاني يبادلها هذه المشاعر، وفي الوقت ذاته يخجل من التصريح بها.
تذهب الرواية سريعا في الإجابة على أسئلة الأحلام، بين استحالة تحققها وبين إدراكها. شخصيات من جنسيات عدة تمر من ممر السرد متفادية الاصطدام مع بعضها البعض. ورغم العجز الظاهر عند البعض، لكن هنالك قوة ظاهرة عند آخرين. هناك مغالطات كبيرة، ساذجة وحادة أحيانا في هذه الرواية، التي حاولت فيها طاهرة علوي أن تحفر اختلافها عن الرواية الإيرانية التقليدية عبر إحداث ثقوب لغوية تمتد في مساحات قريبة جداً من إيران غير متخلية عن إيقاع السرد السريع والراكض دون توقف.
