توصف هذه الرواية على أنّها امتداد للأدب العبثيّ الذي كرّسه ألبرتو مورافيا في الرواية، وأبدع به ألبير كامو في الفلسفة، ونقله إلى السينما مخرجٌ بحجم فيديريكو فيلليني. ولعلّ هذه هي الأسس الثلاثة التي تقوم عليها رواية سورِّنتينو وتنجح بالمزج بينها جميعاً، بدقّة عالية.
يطرق سورِّنتينو أبواب الأدب بلغة جزلة وسلسة، ويستخدم تقنيّات سرديّة متقدّمة. يبني عوالمه على السوريّالية، التي لطالما خَبر آلياتها في عالم السينما. لتظهر الرواية كأنّها عرضٌ سينمائيّ من نوع خاص.
يتطرّق سورِّنتينو إلى أكثر القضايا الفلسفية عمقاً بتعبير متقن كما يسلّط الضوء على المجتمع وانقساماته وإشكالاته بأسلوب بديع. فنراه يفرض على روايته شكل المونولوج الطويل، لكنه لا يخضعها لقالب أدبي واحد، فيبوح بكلّ ما تفيض به النفس البشرية من مشاعر مختلفة. ويضيف على البوح استحضار الذكريات والأحداث الغريبة التي تصادف الإنسان المعاصر دون أن يتقيد بزمان أو مكان محدّدين.
