كان مراد صغيراً حين اختطفوا خاله وأعدموه. لم يكن مجرماً ولا سوابق قضائية له. كل ما خلّفه كرتونة مليئة بالكتب. قرأها كلها ليكتشف أن خاله كان عضواً في حركة ثورية أرادت قلب موازين الصراع الطبقي. حاول أن يواصل مسيرة خاله على طريقته، أن ينتقل إلى طبقة النبلاء من دون حزب ولا منشورات سرّية أو تظاهرات. توقف عن الدراسة وبدأ يدخن الحشيش ويمارس السطو المسلح مع ابنَي حيّه المعدم، عبد الرحمن ورشيد، اللذين شكّل معهما عصابة خاضت صراعات دموية مع سائر العصابات في حيّهم البائس... غير أن شجرة الشوك، في نهاية المطاف، لا تنبت سوى الأشواك.
