كان الليلُ ينزل بكلّ جلالِه، يزحف ويستقر بهدوء على الشوارع، واصلتُ المشي* في شارعٍ طويل، ترتفع على جانبه البنايات فجأة وتختفي فجأة، ويخلو الجانب الآخر من أيّ بناء، كانت منطقة مرتفعة عن سائر المدينة، تبدو المدينة من ذلك الجانب بعيدة بأضوائها الكثيفة مختلفة الألوان، بريقها لا يشبه حقيقتها، تشبه مصباح الإضاءة الذي يشتعلُ من داخله حتى يراه الآخرون، مضيئة بشكل مبالغ لكنها لا ترى شيئًا ممّا يدور في شوارعِها الضيقة، لا تعرف شوارع الموتي التي تحيط بها من كلّ اتجاه، والأهمّ أنها ما زالت لا تدري شيئًا عمّا حدث منذ حوالي ثلاثة أشهر في بقعةٍ هامشيّة على جانب المدينة، بالتحديد في ذلك الشارع المعتم -أو ما يُسمّى مجازًا شارِعًا ربما لتخفيف الألم عن ساكنيه- إلا أنه لا يكاد يبلغ رواقًا في بيتٍ من بيوتِ المدينة الغافلة، مدينةِ ذواتِ البيوتِ المضيئة والسيارات صاخبة الصوت..
