منذ القرن السابع عشر حتى ستينات القرن العشرين لم تكن سارة قد نُسلت بعد. لكن المؤشرات كانت تُطارح إلى أن الغالبية من مثل سارة وغيرهن من النساء اللواتي يُبايعن جسدهن لمقابل حسِّي، وأحيانًا أخرى دون مقابل سوف يقدمون على الحياة. بدأ الأمر في القرن السابع عشر، حينما كانت الحكومة تخُطَّ ألقاب الرجال والنساء المكتنزات الجسد من البغايا؛ من أجل تحصيل الضرائب منهم، و كان أحرَّ سعر لليلة وصل إلى "الشلن"، وقتها كان جُوع جهير يغزو الربوع، وكان السعر باهظٌ للغاية بسبب إرْغام وقهر الضرائب. كانت ربوع ودُور الدعارة وقتها شائعة كحصي التراب، ويُذاع صيتها مثل (باب الشعرية والأزبكية وعرب المحمدي) أما الحسناوات فكان أشهرهن تداولًا ولقبوا بنجوم الصنعة، لأنهن مارسن الدعارة بشكل قانوني مُباحٌ، ومتقن، وتحت سمع وبصر، ومشاركة، ورؤية بوليس الآداب لعشرات السنين، فكان متوسط أعمارهم ثمانية وعشرون عام. تبدأ سهراتهم بالزهزقة، والمغازلات، والنظرات المبطنة، وتشتعل الإثارة عندما يحضر أحدهم "الطبل البلدي" فتطرح النساء، وتتلوى أمام أعْيُن الجائعين، و كان لهم ملابس مخصصة، والدخول بالتذكرة ـ أثناء الحملة الفرنسية وكان مُباح للضباط الفرنسيين مجانًا ـ كانت ترخيص البيوت لصبايا الليل بحجة السكن ومنها (باب الشعرية) بضمان اسم، ولقب صاحب المحل،
