حين نفرغ من قراءة "حبيبتي بكماء" لا نتعب أنفسنا كثيراً في تصنيف هذا العمل وما إذا كان رواية أم مجرد خواطر.
في الحقيقة، العنوان يحتمل الوجهين، فالراوي يكتب رواية مشتركة مع ذاته، فيتسلل إلى وعي القارئ بلطف، ويقوده إلى عيش حكاية حب ناقص ترتعش لها الكلمات، وتتراقص على أنغامها المعاني، معاني الفقدان، يسطرها كعاشق، يريد فضح سرّه بإرادته، وهو يروي قصة حبه لفتاة بكماء، ابتعد عنها بعد أن رفضها المجتمع. يقول: "يشتدُ حزني كلما ذكرتُ أن مجتمعنا كلهُ وقف ضدنا صارخاً "لا يليق برجلٍ سليمٍ أن يرتبط بأنثى ناقصة" وكأنه يضعُ لنا معاييراً للحب لا يجدرُ أن نُخِلّ بها لننال تبريكاته بهذا الحب.. يحزنني أن امرأة مثلك طاغية الجمال وحسنة الصفات لا تملك فرصاً كثيرة لتحيا كما تريدُ ومع من تريد، وتُجبر على أن تكون لمن هم على شاكلتها.. أجرموا في حقنا يا حبيبتي، أبعدونا عن بعضنا ببندٍ "لا يصلحُ" أو "لا يليق" وتجاهلوا أننا معاً نستطيع أن نتخطى عقبة الصوت لأكون لك صوتك وتكونين لي صمتي...".
وفي هذا العمل، يستخدم (السالم) تقنية الرسالة في معظم نصوصه، حيث الحكاية فيها صيغت بتقنية الرسالة التي تقوم على جدلية المتكلم/المخاطب. فالمتكلم هو هتان/الراوي الحاضر في شكل مباشر في النص، والمخاطب هي حنين البكماء، والحاضرة في شكل غير مباشر من خلال الراوي، ما يجعل النص رسالة طويلة، متعددة الأجزاء، موجهة إلى شخص محدد/غائب، فكانت لغة المجاز حاضرة، والصور الشعرية الشفيفة التي أغنت البعد الجمالي فيها، ورُطّبت سرديتها بماء الشعر.
