تعرفت إليه في بهو فندق في كالياري.
رجل وسيم رغم العصا التي يتوكأ عليها ورجله الخشب. حدّثها عن خوضه الحرب وحبه للشعر والعزف على البيانو، وعن توتر علاقته بزوجته، وعن طفلته. وحدثته هي عن الخطّاب الذين كانوا يهربون، عن البئر التي رمت نفسها فيها، عن الجروح التي أحدثتها في ساعديها. ووضعت بين يديه دفترها الأسود ذا الإطار الأحمر الذي كانت تخفيه خشية أن تُتّهم بالجنون.
