عرف النيل مع رفاقه، وشق الثوب الذي دثّرته به أمه في نسجها الحكايات عن عروس البحر خانقة الصبية، رآها في أحلامه تصاحبه في جزيرة الذهب وتعرّفه على ملوك البحار، عندما ترك جسده للموج الهادئ وأرخاه في حضن موجة تسلمه لأخرى، سبح إلى البر الشرقي وعاد من دون تعب، بالذات في أيام التحاريق قبل الفيضان، جلو صفحة النيل وهدوؤها يُغري بالسباحة كأنه الهدوء الذي يسبق العاصفة، يأتي الفيضان مجتاحًا الشوارع مغرقًا إياها بالطمي والمياه المحمَرّة، تنحسر من الشوارع شيئًا فشيئًا بعدما غسلها النيل وأطعم السردين.
عمل بالقفاصة، ينهي يوميته قبل المغرب، تأخذه قدماه إلى النيل، يتأمل الصيادين يفردون الشباك بين المراكب، ينزلون طوايل السردين المفضض، ألحقه أبوه بخياط بلدي عند زاوية العقادين، يتركه ويتجه إلى النيل، ألح على أبيه أن يلحقه صيادًا عند أحد معارفه، اشترط عليه أبوه ألا يسمع شكوى منه بعد ذلك، يستقبل النيل قبل طلوع الشمس، يطرح الشِّباك، يلمه بمساعدة زملائه، يهب الوهّاب البلطي والبوري الصايم صيد الليل.
