كشجرة انتزعت من أرضها، وجردت من جميع معاني الحياة، ملقاة على الطريق، كانت هذه هي حال جيروزاليم، كبير هو الحزن على أن يتسعه قلبها، متشعب ملتف حول رقبتها يكاد يخنقها، ذُعر بولس حين رآها ممدة على الأرض لا هي غائبة عن الوعي، ولا هي متيقظة، أطرافها باردة تنسحب منها الحياة، طلب منها بولس أن تقاوم، أن تزرع نفسها بنفسها من جديد، وأن تزيل بيدها أغصان الحزن الملتفة حولها ... بينما كانت الحياة تتراجع عنها أبى جنينُها إلا أن يعيش وأن يقاوم بدلًا منها، أمسك بزمام الحياة المنفلتة من أمه: لا لن تسقطي جيروزاليم، تشبثي بحريتك، قاومي من أجلي. كان يردد صدى بداخلها حتى ضاع صوته منها وتلاشى. استيقظت لتجد نفسها بين ذراعي منقذتها الصغيرة جدًّا، ممسكة متشبثة بيدها، كأنها تقول لها: جيروزاليم لا تخافي ولا تحزني أنا معك. وضعت جيروزاليم ابنتها مريم وهي شبه فاقدة الوعي رحمة لها من الله.
