هناك مفارقة كامنة بين هذه الرفوف الممتدة المليئة بالأنين. فمجرد وجود هذا العدد الكبير من هذه الكتب يوحي بأن هذا الهدف صعب المنال للغاية، وأن السعادة ليست سهلة.
استحضر في ذهنك صورة رجل الكهف.
حسب تصورك، ربما يبدو غبيًا جدًا. لكنه هو نحن. فصيلتنا -الهومو سابينس سابينس- موجودة على نفس الشكل تقريبًا لما يزيد عن مائة ألف سنة. وسواء كان غبيًا أم لا، فرجل الكهف له أحلام. هو يتوق إلى عالم يتوفر فيه الطعام الطيب بسهولة ويكون الموت جوعًا أمرًا غير محتمل. يريد التحرر من الحيوانات المفترسة التي بين الفينة والأخرى تخطف هاربة عضوًا من أعضاء القبيلة. يود أن يتوقف أبناؤه عن الموت بسبب أمراض لا يفهمها. وعندما يقع هو نفسه مريضًا، يريد أن يساعده شخص آخر على التعافي.
ثم يهز رأسه، ويقطب جبينه مستهجنًا نفسه على تضييع الوقت، ويعود إلى الانشغال بمهمة البقاء على قيد الحياة. فلا جدوى من تمني عالم مستحيل الوجود.
بيد أنه عالم ممكن، وقائم.
ففي العالم المتقدم، نعيش حياة مترفة لم يكن لها مثيل في تاريخ الجنس البشري. يوجد طعام في الثلاجة، وسقف فوق رأسنا، وماء ساخن في الصنابير، وهواء ساخن في المدافئ، وأي منتج يمكن أن يخطر ببالنا هو في متناول أيدينا. مدى حياتنا أطول من أي وقت مضى. نتمتع بصحة أفضل ولفترات زمنية أطول. الجيران لا يحاولون قتلنا في معظم الأحوال. معدل وفيات الرضع منخفض، والعمر أطول.
إنه عالم كان رجال الكهف وملوك زمن ليس ببعيد ليتقاتلوا في سعادة في سبيله (وهو عالم يحلم به مواطنون حاليون لكثير من الأمم الأقل حظًا). لو كنا نستطيع العودة بالزمن إلى الوراء وجلب جدودنا إلى العالم المعاصر، لاتسعت أعينهم في ذهول. كنا سنريهم سيارتنا وطائراتنا ومستشفياتنا ومحلات بقالتنا وغرفنا التي نتحكم بالطقس فيها ونجلس على كراسي مريحة لنقوم بـ"عملنا".
