ومرت الأيام، وتتابعت الشهور، ومضى أكثر الشتاء، ومحسن كما هو؛ سهر، وخداع، وأكاذيب، اما زوجته فكانت طوال تلك الأشهر تبدو سعيدة أمام أسرتها وجميع الناس، لا يعلم سوى الله وحده ما هي فيه من شقاء، وما تتحمله من صبر وألم.
كانت كلما همت بالشكوى إلى والديها، أو برفع أمره إلى من بيدهم ردعه، كما تفعل غيرها في مثل هذه الظروف، عدلت وأبعدت ذلك، إذ كانت لا ترى أمامها سوى الله في السراء والضراء، وكانت لا تريد أن تشرك بربها أحداً في ردعه وعقابة، وأكثر ما كانت تخشاه زيادة المرض على والدها لو علم بسوء معيشتها.
بيد أن هذا التوكل ما كان ليمنعها من الوقوف بمفردها أمام زوجها، او ليجعلها تصمت تجاه أعماله المنكرة، بل كانت لا تفتر عن تقويم ما أعوج منه، ولا تغفل عن محاولة إصلاحه بشتى الوسائل.
