قد يبدو أن الطفل الصغير الذي يصرخ في والديه الواقفيْن في طابور الدفع يريد حلوى بوش بوب، وقد يبدو أن الطفل الذي وصل إلى الصف الثالث الابتدائي عندما يصرف بصره في سأمٍ فإنه يرغب في أن يكون أبواه أكثر استيعابًا له، وقد يبدو أن المراهِقة التي ترغب في ارتداء تنورة قصيرة لا تناسب الآداب العامة إنما ترغب في الشهرة وجذب انتباه الآخر؛ لكن ما يحتاجون إليه حقًّا هو وضع حدود وتوقعات مناسبة. إن ما يحتاجون إليه حقًّا هو فرص حقيقية لتعلم الانضباط، وإظهار المسئولية، وزيادة الثقة بالنفس، والتحلي باحترام الذات، واحترام من حولهم. إن ما يحتاجون إليه حقًّا هو أن نأخذ نحن - الآباء والأمهات - بزمام الأمور. أن نقول لهم: "لا، توقفوا عن ذلك" . أن نخبرهم بأنه ليس عليهم التصرف بأسلوب مزعج لجذب انتباهنا، أو للحصول على ما يريدون. أن نخبرهم بأننا نحبهم بما يكفي لنعلمهم التصرف بطرق أفضل.
قد يبدو أن الأطفال المزعجين الذين يطاوعهم آباؤهم يحصلون على ما يريدون على المدى القريب؛ لكن هذا ليس ما نريده لأطفالنا على المدى البعيد، وهم أنفسهم لا يريدون أن يصبحوا كذلك.
