يقولون إن الرّجل حين يعشق يعود طفلاً، والأنثى حين تعشق تصبح أماً، تلك هي حال حمد، وحال نوف بطلا قصة (يا أغلى ما أملك) للروائي سلامة النعيمي، وقد اختار للقائهما الفضاء الإلكتروني، لم تكن نوف فتاة جميلة، كانت فتاة بدينة وطويلة، ذات شعر أسود وعينين سوداوين، ولم تكن أيضاً قبل تعرّفها على حمد تعرف معنى الحب، عاشته أون لاين أولاً، ثم ما لبث الحبيب أن غاب عن الشاشة، لتعلم لاحقاً أنه أصيب بحادث، فتهرع إلى لندن لرؤيته في المستشفى لتفاجأ بأنه أصبح مقعداً، عندها شعرت أن حياتها توقفت، ولكن حبها لحمد كان أكبر بكثير من المرض.
تتوالى الأحداث في الرواية حتى يتعافى حمد ويتكلل حبهما بالزواج ولكن لم تكن أم أحمد راضية عن هذا الزواج، فتكون "شهد" العروس التي اختارتها الأم لولدها، أمراً لم يكن بالحسبان، ولأن الزواج بامرأة ثانية أمر يتقبله المجتمع، تزوج حمد شهد... بدأت أحضر بعلي ليتزوج بغيري، وحين خروجه من الباب قررت الذهاب معه لحضور العرس مرتدية أجمل ما لدي... وبعدما وصل حمد قبّل جبين شهد، لم يبدُ عليه السرور، ذهبت شموخ للمباركة، سلّمت على العروس وحضنت بعلي وهمستُ له، منك المال ومنها العيال...".
عبر هذا الفضاء يتم تظهير الحكاية، ليتبين لاحقاً أن شهداً كانت حاملاً بطفلة قبل زواجها "وحمد سجلها باسمه خوفاً من الفضيحة... لم أكن أعلم بأن شهد لها علاقة رذيلة مع أحدهم من قبل..." فقرر لاحقاً طلاق شهد وأخذ البنت لتعيش مع أخيها أحمد الذي أنجبته نوف من حمد... وعندما تكبر الطفلة تطالب الأم شهد بحضانتها، ولكنها ترفض العودة لأمها، وتقرر العيش مع حمد على الرغم من أنه ليس الأب البيولوجي لها، ومع نوف التي رأت فيها الأم المثالية...
في الحياة وجوهٌ كثيرة تظهر لنا بأنها رائعة ومتكاملة يرتدون أمامنا أقنعة الطهارة ويزيحون قناع الخبث والجشع…
