الرواية تحكي احداثها قصة تدور على هامش الحروب التي نشبت في البلقان وعلى مر عقود، موضحة بشكل روائي مثير اسباب اندلاع الحرب العالمية الثانية، وتفكك يوغوسلافيا واحتدام النزاعات العرقية في المنطقة، وامتدادها الى حروب الشرق الحالية. ويبدا السرد عندما يقوم مقاتل في فرقة الاعدام باختطاف طفلة بوسنية، والذهاب بها خارج الاراضي اليوغوسلافية، بعد ان اعدم عائلتها، وبعد ان ادرك ان الحرب قد اشرفت على نهايتها وان الامم المتحدة ستفرض عليهم سلام لا زال غير مقتنعا به، فنار انتقامه لازالت متقدة في روحة كالجمر النائم تحت الرماد, بعد مقتل عائلته هو ايضا في تلك الحرب، وتلك المأساة التي اجبرته على الالتحاق بفرقة الاعدام والتي ابادت الالف من الابرياء.
في بلد اخر يدور بين الخاطف والمختطف صراع مرير لا تتعادل فيه موازين القوة, بين طفلة ومقاتل منتقم، بين دينين مختلفين وبين قوميتين تجري بينهم انهار من الدماء.
