منذ فجر التاريخ، كان على الناس أن يقرأوا وجوه بعضهم بعضًا للنجاة بحياتهم، ولذلك استطاعت عقولنا أن تتطور عبر قراءة الوجوه، لتصبح بعد ذلك إحدى السمات الفطرية لدينا.
بدأت الدراسة المنهجية للوجوه عند بعض القبائل في آسيا، وكانت ممارسة سرية مقصورة على عدد محدود من المتخصصين، فعلى سبيل المثال فإن النظام الصيني لقراءة الوجوه تستمر فيه عملية التدريب على قراءة الوجوه في بعض الأحيان إلى أربعين عامًا، ولهذا لم تتوافر نظم منهجية لقراءة الوجوه بسهولة.
وفي الغرب، أخذ هذا الأمر في التغير منذ العصور الوسطى، عندما بدأ شخص يدعى لافاتير دراسة الوجوه ورسمها بشكل جدي، بادئًا مسلكًا غير معهود من قبل؛ كي يجعل قراءة الوجوه مجالًا عامًّا.
ولكن لأننا، نحن البشر، منذ قديم الأزل يعترينا الشعور بالهوس نحو التشكيك فى كل شيء (والانتقاد بشكل مفرط)، فإن هذا النمط من التفكير، جعل كل مؤلفاتنا تمتلئ بمفردات ذات غلظة شديدة عن قراءة الوجوه؛ ففي إحدى المرات قرأت ما يلي:
"هناك خطوة واحدة تفصل بين صاحب الأنف المقعر، والحيوانية والوحشية".
والآن، مَن أصحاب الأنف المقعر؟ أغلب الأطفال مبدئيًّا.
ولا عجب في أن طلاب علم الفراسة العاكفين على هذا العلم وحدهم، هم من اهتموا بدراسة كل ما كُتب عن هذا المجال، وهو ستون كتابًا، على حسب ما وقع في يدي منها، منذ لافاتير.
